How can the idea of universal human rights, which was already struggled for in the European revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, be conceived and realized globally? This was the question that triggered the organization of the Global Assembly on Human Rights and Democracy that is taking place from May 14 to 17, 2023 in Frankfurt, the dates coincide with the celebrations of the 175th anniversary of the first German National Assembly.

This international event seeks to discuss and exchange ideas and strategies for a world with more justice. Alejandra Ancheita, executive director of ProDESC, participates in this meeting attended by activists, feminists, researchers and human rights defenders from 35 countries from all continents.

The aim is for participants to explore how basic rights can be defended and expanded in various parts of the world, even when authoritarian political conditions exist. The people participating in this Global Assembly are involved in various areas such as climate protection, gender justice, the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples, work, health and freedom of expression.

As the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Foundation points out, many of the participants in this meeting “come from countries in which freedom of expression or assembly are far from guaranteed. They have experienced repression and intimidation campaigns and have to live daily with the threat of jail or even death, simply for standing up for social redistribution, free and fair elections or access to land”.

This World Assembly is a protected space for discourse that allows us to look forward. “The great challenges of the present, climate change, the growing social inequality in the world, the escalation of violent relations, the crisis of multilateralism, as well as increasingly narrow spaces for democratic forces point to the need for joint solutions”, organizers point out.

What must be done to ensure human dignity everywhere and for everyone in today’s increasingly united world? How to give life to article 28 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which promises everyone “a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms proclaimed in this Declaration can be fully realized”?

The Global Assembly raises these questions, and after a nearly year-long process, civil society actors from around the world come together to reflect on the basics of a common humanity that connects the diverse environments of life.
